Consumer prices in Turkey rose 10.23 percent year-on-year in March of 2018, easing slightly from a 10.26 percent increase in the prior month. The inflation rate remained at its lowest level since July, driven by slowing prices of furnishings and clothing & footwear. Also, cost advanced at the same pace for housing and utilities. Inflation Rate in Turkey averaged 35.26 percent from 1965 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 138.71 percent in May of 1980 and a record low of -4.01 percent in June of 1968.

Turkish March Inflation Rate Lowest in 8 Months


Consumer prices in Turkey rose 10.23 percent year-on-year in March of 2018, easing slightly from a 10.26 percent increase in the prior month. The inflation rate remained at its lowest level since July.

Year-on-year, prices rose less for: furnishing, household equipment, routine maintenance of the house (15.41 percent vs 15.66 percent in February); clothing & footwear (10.74 percent vs 10.77 percent) and recreation & culture (7.14 percent vs 8.24 percent). Meantime, cost went up at the same pace for housing & utilities (9.46 percent) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (0.9 percent).

In contrast, prices continued to advance for: food & non-alcoholic beverages (10.37 percent vs 10.27 percent); transport (13.41 percent vs 13.19 percent); hotels, cafes & restaurants (11.67 percent vs 11.53 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (10.87 percent vs 10.77 percent).

Annual core inflation rate, which excludes energy, food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and gold, fell to 11.44 percent in March from 11.94 percent in February.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.99 percent in March, higher than a 0.73 percent rise in February but below market expectations of a 1 percent gain.

Others include: furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (8 percent); hotels, cafes and restaurants (7.5 percent); clothing and footwear (7.4 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (5 percent). The index also includes miscellaneous goods and services (4.7 percent); communication (4.4 percent); recreation and culture (3.8 percent); health (2.7 percent) and education (2.6 percent).
