Taiwan's consumer prices rose by 2.19 percent year-on-year in February 2018, following a revised 0.89 percent increase in the previous month and easily beating market expectations of 1.60 percent. It was the highest inflation rate since January last year, boosted by higher prices of: transportation and communication (2.25 percent vs 1.65 percent in January); miscellaneous (8.93 percent vs 1.99 percent); education and entertainment (1.81 percent vs -1.45 percent); food (0.97 percent vs 0.82 percent), mainly meats (3.32 percent vs 2.85 percent), fish and seafood (7.44 percent vs 0.80 percent) and vegetables (27.63 percent vs 25.04 percent); and housing (1.05 percent vs 1.03 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy hit a nine-year high of 2.39 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.22 percent after a 0.23 percent decline in January. Inflation Rate in Taiwan averaged 4.11 percent from 1960 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 61.47 percent in March of 1974 and a record low of -3.09 percent in October of 1970.
