The Taiwanese economy grew 3.28% yoy in the fourth quarter of 2017, slightly higher than an upwardly revised 3.18% rise in the previous period and in line with the preliminary reading. It is the strongest growth rate since the first quarter of 2015. On the demand side, private consumption increased faster (2.89% vs 2.62% in Q3), boosted by higher spending on communication, clothing and footwear and financial services. In contrast, government spending contracted 1.32% after growing 0.9% in Q3. Also, there was a decline in gross fixed capital formation (-2.18% vs -2.73%) as investment in machinery and equipment was down. Meanwhile, exports grew 6% after jumping 11.28% in the previous quarter, mainly driven by strong demand for electronic components and machinery. Imports rose at a much slower 1.78% after 6.82%. For 2018, the economy is expected to grow 2.42%, revised up 0.13 percentage point from the previous forecast. GDP Annual Growth Rate in Taiwan averaged 6.83 percent from 1962 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 17.06 percent in the third quarter of 1978 and a record low of -8.12 percent in the first quarter of 2009.

Taiwan’s economy is export oriented. As such, manufacturing is crucial and accounts for around 31 percent of GDP. Like in most advanced economies, the services sector is the biggest and constitutes nearly 65 percent of GDP.
