Japan Retail Sales Lose Steam in March 1971-2018 | Data | Chart

Retail sales in Japan rose by 1.0 percent year-on-year in March of 2018, after an upwardly revised 1.7 percent gain in the previous month while markets expected a 1.7 percent rise. Sales increased at a slower pace for food & beverages (1.8 percent vs 2.5 percent in February), fuel (7.0 percent vs 13.0 percent), machinery & equipment (2.0 percent vs 4.6 percent). In addition, sales declined further for motor vehicles (-4.9 percent vs -2.0 percent) and general merchandise (-1.2 percent vs -0.5 percent). By contrast, sales grew at a faster clip for medicine & toiletry (4.7 percent vs 2.3 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales declined by 0.7 percent after expanding 0.4 percent in the previous month. Retail Sales YoY in Japan averaged 4.61 percent from 1971 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 36.50 percent in January of 1979 and a record low of -14.30 percent in March of 1998.
