French industrial production unexpectedly rose by 1.9 percent month-on-month in October of 2017, following an upwardly revised 0.8 percent gain in the preceding month and beating market expectations of a 0.1 percent fall. It was the second straight month of increase in industrial output and the strongest since March, as manufacturing output jumped (2.7 percent from 0.6 percent in September), supported by a surge in machinery and equipment goods (6.1 percent from 0.1 percent), a further increase in other manufacturing (2.7 percent from 2.1 percent) and a rebound in transport equipment (1.9 percent from -3.8 percent). Meantime, the production of mining and quarrying; energy; and water supply declined (-3.4 percent from 1.9 percent). Also, construction activities continued to contract (-0.3 percent from -0.2 percent in September). Industrial Production Mom in France averaged -0.01 percent from 1990 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 4.20 percent in November of 2005 and a record low of -5 percent in November of 2008.

In France, industrial production measures the output of businesses integrated in industrial sector of the economy. Manufacturing is the most important sector and accounts for 86 percent of total production. The biggest segments within Manufacturing are: Food products and beverages (13 percent of total production); machinery and equipment goods (13 percent), of which computer, electronic and optical products (5 percent); basic metals and fabricated metal products (12 percent); other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (12 percent); transport equipment (10 percent); rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (8 percent); and chemicals and chemical products (6 percent). Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning account for 11 percent of total output, Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation account for 1 percent and Mining and quarrying account also for 1 percent.
