Consumer prices in Chile increased 1.8 percent year-on-year in March 2018, easing from a 2 percent rise in the prior month. It was the lowest inflation rate since September, as prices slowed for food (2.4 percent vs 2.8 percent in February) and fell further for transport (-0.8 percent vs -0.5 percent). Also, cost weakened for education (3.9 percent vs 4.4 percent), furnishings (0.5 percent vs 1 percent) and recreation & culture (0.8 percent vs 1.4 percent) while increased at the same pace for housing & utilities (3.3 percent) and health (3.6 percent). In contrast, prices continued to rise for miscellaneous goods & services (2.5 percent vs 2.2 percent) and restaurants & hotels (4 percent vs 3.9 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items, was steady at 1.6 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.2 percent, after a 0.5 percent increase in February and below market expectations of a 0.4 percent gain. Inflation Rate in Chile averaged 41.93 percent from 1951 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 746.30 percent in April of 1974 and a record low of -3.40 percent in November of 2009.

In Chile, the main components of the consumer price index are: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (19 percent of the total weight); Transportation (14.5 percent) and Housing, Water, Electricity and Other Fuels (13.8 percent). Education account for 8 percent; Miscellaneous Goods and Services for 7.2 percent and Furniture and Household Equipment and Conservation for 7 percent. Others include: Leisure and Culture (6.7 percent); Health (6.4 percent); Communications (5 percent); Clothing and Footwear (4.5 percent); Restaurants and Hotels (4.4 percent) and Alcoholic Beverages, Narcotics and Tobacco (3.3 percent).
