The unemployment rate in Brazil went down to 11.8 percent in the last quarter of 2017 from 12 percent in the three months to November, beating market expectations of 11.9 percent. It is the lowest unemployment rate since October of 2016. Unemployment Rate in Brazil averaged 8.99 percent from 2012 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 13.70 percent in March of 2017 and a record low of 6.20 percent in December of 2013.

Brazil Unemployment Rate Lowest in 14 Months


The unemployment rate in Brazil went down to 11.8 percent in the last quarter of 2017 from 12 percent in the three months to November and below market expectations of 11.9 percent. It is the lowest jobless rate since the quarter ended October of 2016. Still, considering full 2017, the average jobless rate was 12.7 percent, above 11.5 percent in 2016 and the highest since the series began.

Compared with the three months to September, the number of unemployed declined by 5 percent or 650 thousand to 12.3 million and employment went up by 0.9 percent or 811 thousand to 92.1 million. The number of people in the labour force was stable at 104.4 million and the number of those detached from the labour force were nearly unchanged at 64.6 million.

The average real income received in all jobs by employed persons was estimated at BRL 2,152 in the December quarter, barely unchanged from both the previous period and the same period a year earlier.

Considering full 2017, there were 13.2 million unemployed persons, 1.5 million more than in 2016 while those employed went up by 264 thousand to 90.6 million. The labour force increased by 1.7 million to 103.9 million. The most jobs were lost in agriculture, fishery and forestry (8.6 million from 9.2 million) and constuction (6.8 million from 7.3 million). In contrast, industry added 131 thousand jobs to 11.7 million; internal trade 100 thousand to 17.5 million; accomodation and restaurants 513 thousand to 5.1 million. The average real income increased 2.4 percent from 2016 to BRL 2,141.
