Retail sales in Brazil rose 1 percent month-over-month in April 2018, following an upwardly revised 1.1 percent gain in March and easily beating market expectations of 0.6 percent. The increase was led by higher sales of: equipment and materials for office, computer and communication (4.8 percent vs -3.8 percent in March); fuels and lubricants (3.4 percent vs 1.9 percent); pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, perfumery and cosmetics articles (1.5 percent vs 1.2 percent); hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1 percent vs 0.1 percent); books, newspapers, magazines, stationery (0.9 percent vs -0.7 percent); furniture and household appliances (0.7 percent, the same as in March); and fabrics, apparel and footwear (0.3 percent vs 0.8 percent). Meanwhile, sales of other articles were unchanged (vs 0.7 percent in March). Compared to April 2017, the volume of retail trade rose 0.6 percent, the 13th consecutive month of gains. Retail Sales MoM in Brazil averaged 0.30 percent from 2000 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 4.30 percent in January of 2017 and a record low of -2.50 percent in January of 2016.
