Consumer prices in Brazil increased 2.84 percent year-on-year in February of 2018, barely unchanged form 2.86 percent in January and market expectations of 2.85 percent. It is the lowest inflation rate for a February month since 1999. Inflation Rate in Brazil averaged 356.49 percent from 1980 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 6821.31 percent in April of 1990 and a record low of 1.65 percent in December of 1998.

Brazil Inflation Rate Nearly Steady at 2.84%


Consumer prices in Brazil increased 2.84 percent year-on-year in February of 2018, barely unchanged form 2.86 percent in January and market expectations of 2.85 percent. It is the lowest inflation rate for a February month since 1999.

On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.32 percent after 0.29 percent in January and in line with forecasts. It is the lowest monthly rate for a February month since 2000 when it was 0.13 percent. The biggest upward pressure came from cost of education (3.89 percent), mainly due to tuition fees as the new academic year started. Also, prices of transportation increased 0.74 percent, mainly due to cost for urban bus and gasoline. In contrast, prices of food fell 0.33 percent, mainly due to meat and fruit.

Considering the first two months of the year, inflation was 0.61 percent, the lowest on record.

Brazil Inflation Rate

In Brazil, the inflation rate measures a broad rise or fall in prices that consumers pay for a standard basket of goods. The most important categories of the index are: Food and beverages (26 percent of the total weight); transport (18 percent); housing (15 percent); health care (12 percent); and personal expenses (11 percent). Also, clothing accounts for 6 percent; education for 5 percent; household goods for 4 percent; and communication for 4 percent. Data is collected in the Metropolitan Areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador and Curitiba and in the cities of Goiânia and Brasília.
