Brazil's budget deficit fell to 8.9 percent of GDP in 2016 from a record high of 10.2 percent of GDP in 2015. The overall budget deficit declined to BRL 562.8 billion in 2016 from BRL 613 billion in the previous year; and the closely monitored primary budget balance posted a record deficit of BRL 155.8 billion, or 2.5 percent of GDP, from BRL 111.2 billion, or 1.9 percent of GDP, in 2015. The rapid deterioration of the country's finances has significantly raised the country's debt burden leading to a gross debt of 69.5 percent of GDP, higher than 65.5 percent in 2015. Government Budget in Brazil averaged -4.14 percent of GDP from 2001 until 2016, reaching an all time high of -2 percent of GDP in 2008 and a record low of -10.20 percent of GDP in 2015.
