Brazil's budget deficit fell to 7.8 percent of GDP in 2017 from 9 percent of GDP in 2016 and a record high of 10.2 percent in 2015. The overall budget deficit declined to BRL 511.41 billion in 2017 from BRL 562.82 billion in the previous year; and the closely monitored primary budget balance posted a record deficit of BRL 110.58 billion, or 1.7 percent of GDP, compared with BRL 155.79 billion, or 2.5 percent of GDP, in 2016. The rapid deterioration of the country's finances has significantly raised the country's debt burden leading to a gross debt of 74.0 percent of GDP, higher than 70.0 percent in 2016. Government Budget in Brazil averaged -4.36 percent of GDP from 2001 until 2017, reaching an all time high of -2 percent of GDP in 2008 and a record low of -10.20 percent of GDP in 2015.
