The Westpac Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index for Australia declined by 0.6 percent from the previous month to 102.4 in April of 2018. The measure of family finances over the next 12 months dropped by 5.8 percent and the gauge of whether it was a good time to buy major household items fell by 0.5 percent. Meanwhile, the measure of family finances compared to a year ago advanced 2.5 percent. Also, expectations for the economic outlook over the next 12 months increased by 0.6 percent and those for the economic outlook over the next five years jumped by 2.9 percent. Consumer Confidence in Australia averaged 101.33 Index Points from 1974 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 123.94 Index Points in May of 2007 and a record low of 64.61 Index Points in November of 1990.

Australia Consumer Confidence

The Consumer Sentiment Index is based on a survey of over 1,200 Australian households. The Index is an average of five component indexes which reflect consumers' evaluations of their household financial situation over the past year and the coming year, anticipated economic conditions over the coming year and the next five years, and buying conditions for major household items. The index scores above 100 indicate that optimists outweigh pessimists.
